Sheep Covered In 90-Pounds Of Wool Gets Life-Saving Makeover

Three years ago, a hiker climbing Mount Alexander in Victoria, Australia, noticed something unusual on the ground ahead. At first, it looked like nothing more than a massive heap of dirty, matted wool.

As he stepped closer, he froze. From beneath the tangled fluff, a pair of eyes stared back at him, silently begging for help.

Hidden under years of overgrown fleece was a sheep who had lost the strength to stand. He had likely been lying there for days, trapped under the crushing weight of his own wool, with little hope that anyone would ever stop.

The kind-hearted hiker refused to leave him. Instead, he stayed by the sheep’s side and contacted a nearby farm animal sanctuary, Edgar’s Mission, asking for urgent help.

When the sanctuary staff received photos of the sheep, later named Alex, their hearts sank. He was burdened by an overwhelming amount of wool, unable to move, and dangerously weak.

Rescuing Alex would not be easy. Between his body weight and the dense layers of fleece, carrying him down the mountain would require a coordinated effort.

Still, the team from Edgar’s Mission wouldn’t consider leaving him behind. They arrived with a stretcher, carefully lifting Alex together and carrying him to safety, step by step.

Once inside the sanctuary’s ambulance, founder Pam Ahern began administering life-saving fluids. As she examined him, she could tell he was frightened, unfamiliar with human touch, and unsure of what was happening.

She spoke gently to him, promising that the heavy coat smothering his body would soon be gone and that he would feel relief.

At the sanctuary, the team immediately got to work. Cutting away Alex’s fleece required precision and speed. One wrong move could injure his fragile skin, but waiting too long could send him into shock.

As layers of matted wool fell away, something remarkable happened. Hope slowly returned to Alex’s eyes.

“I lifted the wool from his eye, and he looked straight at me,” Ahern later said. “And I thought, ‘You’re going to live.’ He’d held on for so long. That tiny bit of hope was all he needed.”

Hours later, the final clump of debris-filled fleece was removed. When the team weighed it, they were stunned. Alex’s wool alone weighed 88 pounds, nearly as much as his body without it.

“He was carrying almost his entire body weight on his back,” Ahern said.

Wrapped in a warm jacket, Alex was placed in a pen with two gentle resident sheep, Chloe and Molly Brown, who stayed by his side through the night.

In the days that followed, Alex slowly regained his strength. Surrounded by care and companionship, his confidence returned along with his health.

Today, nearly three years later, Alex is thriving. He spends his days enjoying hay meals and relaxing with Chloe and Molly Brown, safe and content.

His life may be simple, but it is one he no longer takes for granted. Thanks to a stranger who stopped, and a team that refused to give up, the weight of the world has truly been lifted from Alex’s back.
